3A molecular sieves have a nominal pore opening of 3 Angstroms, which is ideal for adsorbing water molecules (approx. 2.8 Å) while excluding refrigerant molecules like R134a or R600a. 4A sieves, with larger pore sizes, can co-adsorb refrigerant molecules, causing desiccant heating and chemical breakdown. For modern refrigerants and POE oils, 3A molecular sieves are standard to prevent desiccant degradation and oil breakdown.
The desiccant weight depends on the system’s initial refrigerant charge, lubricant type, and design evaporator temperature. Typically, domestic refrigerators using R600a require 10g to 15g of desiccant. Larger domestic freezers and commercial display units use 20g to 30g. Sizing must ensure sufficient capacity to keep system moisture levels below 60 ppm (under ARI standard 710) over the compressor's operational lifespan.
Activated Alumina has high capacity for adsorbing organic acids and inorganic acids (such as HF and HCl). While molecular sieves excel at water removal, adding an activated alumina layer helps protect systems that have experienced motor burnouts or those using highly reactive POE lubricants from acid damage.
