Phosphor-copper alloys (typically containing 5% to 8% phosphorus) are self-fluxing when used to join copper-to-copper components. The phosphorus reacts to form a protective phosphate barrier, preventing oxidation during heating. However, when joining copper to brass, bronze, or steel, an external flux is required. Adding silver (typically 2%, 5%, or 15%) lowers the alloy's liquidus temperature, improves electrical conductivity, and significantly increases joint ductility, making the connection highly resilient to operational vibration and thermal cycling.
Refrigeration filter driers operate in highly demanding environments with constant vibration, pressure fluctuations, and potential moisture exposure. Standard brass alloys are vulnerable to stress corrosion cracking over time. Using high-purity, oxygen-free copper shells guarantees excellent thermal conductivity, easy brazing, resistance to oxidation, and robust hermetic joints capable of withstanding system pressures up to 45 bar or higher.
Brazing failures are typically caused by insufficient capillary action, surface oxides, overheating, or inadequate joint clearance. To prevent failures: 1. Ensure a joint clearance of 0.05mm to 0.15mm to optimize capillary pull. 2. Thoroughly clean the joining surfaces to remove grease, dirt, and oxide films. 3. Purge the piping with nitrogen gas during brazing to prevent the formation of internal copper oxides. 4. Select a brazing alloy with the appropriate solidus/liquidus range for your specific torch or induction heating setup.
