Often designated as Bundy Pipe (and manufactured globally under standards like ASTM A254 and SAE J527), this tubing represents a highly specialized mechanical system. Unlike simple extruded tubes, double-walled Bundy pipe is manufactured by wrapping a copper-coated low-carbon steel strip through 720 degrees of roll-forming. The concentric structure is then heated in a controlled reducing atmosphere furnace, where the copper coatings melt and flow by capillary action to form a continuous, metallic brazed joint between all overlapping steel layers.
This process results in a composite tube possessing extreme pressure endurance (burst limits exceeding 100 MPa), exceptional structural compliance, and high vibration resistance. The resulting clean, carbon-free inner surface provides a low resistance path for critical refrigerants (R134a, R600a, R290, R410A) and hydraulic oils.
